Keynote - Crowdsourcing Smartly: Are We Prepared To Flip The Big Data Switch?
No previous generation has needed to tackle the complex challenges society will confront in the coming decades, from combatting terrorism to safeguarding the future of the planet. To succeed, we must find new ways to manage our institutions. Getting outside ideas — often called open innovation or crowdsourcing — should be as vital to the performance of public institutions as it has been to commerce and science. Beth Simone Noveck explores how new data tools hold the potential to transform how we govern, making it possible to pinpoint more diverse expertise in solving hard problems. Through “technologies of expertise” and crowd-sourcing we can create innovative institutions, active citizenship and innovative politicians.

Limited Capacity filling up

Tired of endless project documentation? What if we told you that it’s possible to manage a project with a one-page document? This presentation covers the ease of managing a small to mid-size project with a one-page project plan. The page covers: scope, quality, schedule, budget, resources and risk. All of this is on a one-page document, and as the page is updated, it provides the current status of the project. It’s an excellent tool to leverage for team collaboration, project communication and compliance with TAC 216. In this presentation, we’ll show you the benefits and how to create your own.

Put a Couch in Your Office
Limited Capacity seats available

In the IT world, the simple fact that we are supporting individuals is often lost in the hustle of new technology, projects and technical issues. Learning how to interact with customers as individuals and fellow collaborators, instead of mass consumers, is essential to building good working relationships. By placing value on each person as an individual, we are able to build rapport with customers and better understand their needs. We will discuss collaborative working relationships; the benefits of knowing your customers and having them know you; and how to foster those relationships and goodwill.

Supporting and Modernizing ‘Legacy’ Homegrown Web Apps
Limited Capacity seats available

We all have them: homegrown, purpose-built web applications from a previous era. They are several (major) versions behind on their framework, have an outdated look and feel, and lack brand standards, among other problems. But they never seem to make it to the top of the to-do list until they stop working, the person who built them leaves, or the security scanner finds a laundry list of vulnerabilities. We’ll discuss modernizing legacy web apps, including: decoupling data access, upgrading the UI/UX, where common resources/libraries can be helpful, why rewriting from scratch is so common in higher ed, and takeaways for building new apps that can withstand the test of time.
